About the Indiana University Alumni Association
- The IU Alumni Association was founded in 1854 in response to a
devastating fire that threatened the existence of Indiana University.
- In 2004, the association is celebrating its 150-year history of service of
connecting alumni and serving the university.
- During its century-and-a-half in existence; the association was instrumental
in developing the IU Foundation, IU Varsity Club, Indiana Sports
Network, and Hoosiers for Higher Education.
- Indiana University has more than 460,000 living graduates.
- More than half (50.3 percent) of IU’s graduates live in Indiana.
- Thirty-five percent of Indiana’s teachers, 90 percent of its dentists,
64 percent of its optometrists, 40 percent of its physicians, and 25 percent
of its judges are Indiana University alumni.
- The Association awarded more than 200 scholarships totaling
approximately $250,000 during 2003, and it has awarded more than $2.6
million in scholarships in its history.
- The Association operates more than 160 groups around the worl 27
constituent societies, 24 affiliate groups, and more than 100 alumni chapters.
- The Association has alumni offices on all eight Indiana University
campuses.
- The IUAA welcomes alumni back to IU through Homecoming and a
variety of other special events, and it keeps alumni connected to each other
and to their alma mater through chapters, travel, lifelong learning, and many
other programs and services.
