Stepping Up for IU

Paul Caine has enjoyed the kind of meteoric rise to success that has become the stuff of legend in the entertainment industry.

In just over 20 years, he has embarked on a remarkable journey that has taken him from junior sales representative at Time Inc. to overseeing six of the country’s most successful magazines and websites, including People, Entertainment Weekly, and Essence.

Paul grew up on the East Coast and was a student at a small liberal arts college when he stumbled upon a quirky little film called Breaking Away.

The film led him to IU, and was the beginning of a success story that shows no signs of slowing down. Paul credits IU with more than just an academic preparation for his post-college achievements.

“Had I not gone to IU,” he says, “I have no doubts that I would have taken a completely different career path.”

Paul’s personal connection to IU has meant that he has not only kept in touch, but he has played an active role as a mentor, as a supporter and sponsor of the Department of Telecommunications’ MultiVisions conference, and as a visiting teacher of workshops and seminars for the department.

Paul says his IU involvement is three-fold. In addition to his work for the Department of Telecommunications and his mentoring of students and young alumni, he stays connected to the IUAA.

“There have been some wonderful programs where the university and Alumni Association have worked hard to reach out to more and more people and to get a wider spectrum of participants,” he says.

Paul describes IU as a huge contributor to his success, and he looks for opportunities to give back.

"I try to step up to help out where I can and give access to opportunities that will attract a larger audience,” Paul says. “Anything I can do to help make it easier for the next IU generation makes me feel fulfilled."
