Hooked on IU
Sara Laycock is a natural born leader who decided to dedicate her time and many talents to the Alumni Association immediately after graduating from IU.
Straight out of college and working for the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, Sara was invited to serve on the IUAA Monroe County Chapter board.
“At the time the chapter was looking to grow its base and attract more young alumni. So I was really happy to get involved,” she says. “And from there I was ‘hooked.’ I’ve been involved in chapter programs ever since.”
After moving to Indianapolis in 2005, Sara’s service to IUAA continued almost seamlessly. Still only 30 years old, she has served on the boards of two IUAA chapters and is the immediate past president of the Central Indiana Chapter.
An advocate for young alumni seeking leadership roles, Sara believes that the IUAA is the best place for recent grads to start.
“At the chapter level you don’t have to work long years to get into leadership positions,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for young alumni to have an active leadership role early on. Recent grads are looking to build their resumes and volunteering is a good résumé addition. It also provides quality leadership training.”
Sara has become something of a role model for young alums — especially women alums — who are looking to serve their communities and become leaders.
Serving IU has become second nature to her.
“It gives me a great opportunity to connect with my community and with my alma mater and to give back,” she says proudly. “I had a great four years at IU. I wasn’t as involved as I could have been while I was there. This is my way of extending all the positive energy I absorbed in Bloomington and giving some of it back to my community while waving the IU flag.”
