Candidate Profile
Sam Locke
Nonprofit Manager
I believe IU is and should be an international leader in training future generations of productive citizens, cutting-edge research, and community development. As a member of the IU Board of Trustees, I pledge to champion the following issues:
- Insistence on fiscal responsibility in capital projects and executive compensation to ensure maximum return on taxpayer and private sector investment in IU
- An athletic program that is clean, state-of-the-art and economically self-sufficient. To help achieve this goal, IU should appropriately recognize legendary figures like Bob Knight and Bill Garrett for the role they have played in developing the school’s reputation
- Resisting the persistence of the current board to outsource University jobs including the IU Bookstore and motor pool service
- Active budget and program oversight to assure resources are available to attract and maintain quality faculty and staff at wages competitive with our Big Ten peers
- Equipping our regional campuses to play a critical role in the economic recovery and workforce development of Indiana and the Midwest
- Maintain a commitment to cutting-edge research while at the same time fulfilling our duty to provide students with a basic education
- Development of programs to retain more IU graduates in professional positions within Indiana; the alumni network must play a critical role in meeting this challenge
- Making undergraduate and graduate academic programs more accessible across modern methods of communication while retaining rigorous academic standards
I seek this position not for personal gain or glory, but because of the deep dedication I have for the University. I immensely enjoyed my Indiana University experience and want to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities.
I currently reside in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, where I am employed as the Manager of Funds Development Services at the national headquarters for the Presbyterian Church (USA). My wife, Kara Kosowski Locke, and I met our freshman year in the IU dorms and have, together, been loyal IU advocates ever since. I am a member of the IU Alumni Association, the I-Association and Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Outside of IU activities I am a small business owner, a member of the American Legion, and active in local community organizations.
The deepest responsibility of a Trustee is to hold the administration of IU accountable. In so doing, I ask you to hold me accountable as your representative. If elected, I will commit to an open and ongoing dialogue for your feedback and suggestions throughout my term by making myself available to any alumni group seeking discourse on issues coming before the board. Additionally, I will maintain a vibrant internet presence, where I will post detailed information about current issues facing the University, elicit your input, and justify every vote I make on your behalf.
