Indiana University Alumni Association
Bloomington, Ind.

From 1993 to 2002, Clarence W. Boone held a joint appointment with the IU Alumni Association as an affiliate club director and with the IU Foundation as a development officer. In 2000, Boone added the Office of Community and School Partnerships to his portfolio where he directed a number of early intervention programs with middle and high school students to compel them to consider preparing for college.

In 2002, he began serving as full-time director of the Neal-Marshall Alumni Club (NMAC), the African American Arts Institute Alumni Association (AAAIAA), the IU Asian Alumni Association (IU AAA), the Groups Alumni Association (GAA), the Latino Alumni Association (LAA) and he also serves on the IUAA "I" Association.

Boone coordinates alumni events and programs that specifically target underrepresented alumni, faculty, staff, and students. In his capacity as director of diversity programming, Boone assists the IUAA in increasing minority involvement and participation. He also identifies and cultivates prospective minority alumni leaders and donors; and serves as a liaison to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (DEMA).

"The IU AAA is, by far, one of the most impressive and progressive affiliate groups that I have had the pleasure of working with. There is immense potential and great promise with this organization. The sky is the limit and the best is yet to come!"

Interests: Radio broadcasting and voiceover talent projects.

Jessica K. Kim

BA’04
COOK Medical Inc. (2004-2007)
Bloomington, Ind.

"I accepted my first position in marketing with COOK Medical Inc. a few months prior to my graduation from IU in 2004. After three years at COOK Medical I decided to pursue a career in medicine and I am currently fulfilling my pre-medical requirements at IU. I plan on applying for medical school beginning this summer. While fulfilling my pre-medical requirements, I was the project manager for the newly designed and updated Black Widow Web site at www.jeanettelee.com."

"I was thrilled when I received a phone call regarding the IU AAA from a friend of mine that I took classes with during my undergraduate studies. After meeting other members in the association, I immediately joined the ranks. I was excited to learn that an affiliate group of this nature was recently created and continually seeking new and active members. As an undergraduate, I actively participated in the Asian American Association and activities sponsored by the Asian Culture Center. As a graduate, the IU AAA affords me opportunities to participate in social events, to network with other IU alumni, and to participate in student development programs with groups I was involved with as a student. Being a part of the IU AAA is a fulfilling and rewarding experience."

Interests: "I absolutely love music! I am currently a member of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra where I play violin. I also enjoy participating in athletic activities such as running, volleyball, tennis, and golf. I am always looking for opportunities to travel and explore new countries and cultures. Meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds is a true pleasure. I would like to explore my horticultural interests (though my green thumb is quite lacking). If I do have a chance to read outside of my MCAT study books, I enjoy reading about medical and mental health, poker strategies, easy cooking, ecological conservation, and history."

Thien Nguyen

Senior in psychology – currently fulfilling pre-medical requirements
Consultant – UITS STC. and staff member at the Asian Culture Center
Bloomington, Ind.

"I started working with the IU AAA when I accepted the position as liaison for the IU AAA and the Asian Culture Center, a position I still hold. I am excited to see that the IU AAA is trying to keep in contact with IU Alumni. I enjoy being a student representative for the IU AAA. Throughout my term as student liaison for the IU AAA and the ACC, I have noticed the advancements made and I am excited to see the IU AAA continually grow and improve. I am looking forward to experiencing such improvements for as long as I am still a student at IU and after I graduate."

Interests: Sports including tennis, swimming, soccer, football, etc. Playing and listening to music, going to concerts, nature, and pretty much anything else.

Sophia Grace Travis

BA’92
Musician, politician
Monroe County Council at-large councilwoman
Bloomington, Ind.

"For me, the IU AAA is a reflection of the evolution of IU’s willingness to embrace and recognize diverse people. In this instance it provides a fun, dynamic way that current students are cultivated as future alumni, and for many of us to stay connected to our experiences as students. I’m pleased to be a part of an organization that, were it around when I was in school, would have enhanced my student life. This opportunity is an outlet for giving back to the place I thank for nourishing my creative and intellectual growth. I was invited to join the IU AAA by people I respect and know, people civically engaged with the local community beyond the Sample Gates. All of the board members care about everyone’s experiences with IU; it was an honor to be asked!"

Interests: Independent music, travel, local politics, and historic buildings.
