2006 Chapter Award
IUAA recognizes the D.C. Chapter with three awards: 2006 Chapter of the Year/Circle of Excellence, Student Recruitment, and Community Service
The Indiana University Alumni Association recently awarded the Washington, D.C. Chapter three awards, including the prestigious 2006 Chapter of the Year award for the Wells Division (large out-of-state chapters) and the 2006 Circle of Excellence Award. These awards are given to chapters judged to be outstanding in their service to IU and its local alumni base.
The Washington, D.C. Chapter’s awards honored the chapter for its many achievements, which consist of community service activities such as our participation with the "Hands on D.C." event, which is an annual event that places hundreds of volunteers into the D.C. public schools to help revitalize them. Volunteers helped with painting, building, landscaping, and many other hands-on projects. The Washington, D.C. Chapter sponsored a local D.C. high school by donating $500 and had 10 volunteers to assist with the hands-on work in the school.
In addition, the Washington, D.C. Chapter was recognized for its programming. These events included game-watching parties for IU men’s basketball, our intramural sports participation with the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) league, wine-tasting events, and attending Kennedy Center events. The chapter also hosts many happy hours throughout the year at local restaurants/bars to bring alumni together for socializing, networking, and mingling.
IUAA awarded the chapter the Student Recruitment Award, which recognized the chapter’s close working relationship with IU’s Office of Admissions and our recruitment of IU students from the Washington, D.C. area. During fall 2005, chapter volunteers represented IU at eight college fairs and assisted with the annual IU Preview Night for the D.C. area. During spring 2006, the chapter hosted admitted students and their families at the Indiana Day reception with President Herbert and the chapter called 200 admitted students to encourage those students to choose IU as their college. And the chapter hosted approximately 50 IU freshmen and parents at its annual "Send-Off" picnic for new IU students living in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas.
The IU Alumni Association acknowledges the important role that the Washington, D.C. Chapter plays in carrying on the spirit of IU in our community and in providing opportunities for alumni to stay connected to their alma mater.
Congratulations to our board members, volunteers, members, and participants who helped the chapter with its programs and events during the past year. We could not succeed without everyone’s enthusiasm and participation. Thank you!
