2007 Chapter Award
IUAA recognizes the D.C. chapter with two awards: 2007 Chapter of the Year/Circle of Excellence and Community Service
The Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) has again awarded the Washington, D.C. Chapter for its outstanding programming for our area alumni and community service work in the Washington, D.C. area. For the second year in a row, the Chapter received the prestigious Chapter of the Year award for the Wells Division (large out-of-state chapters) and the Circle of Excellence Award. These awards are given to chapters judged to be outstanding in their service to IU, its local alumni base, and its community.
The Washington, D.C. Chapter was recognized for its programming held for alumni, which included:
- Kennedy Center events
- Wine-tasting
- Game-watching parties for IU men's basketball
- Intramural sports participation with the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) league
- Professional sporting events
- Happy Hours throughout the year at local restaurants/bars to bring alumni together for socializing, networking, and mingling
- IU Holiday Party
The Chapter also works closely with IU’s Office of Admissions for our recruitment of IU students from the Washington, D.C. area, including volunteers who:
- Represented IU at seven (7) college fairs
- Assisted with the annual IU Preview Night for the D.C. area
- Hosted admitted students and their families at the Indiana Day reception with President Herbert
- Called 100 admitted students to encourage those students to attend our IU Send-Off
- Gathered with approximately 30 IU freshmen and parents at the Chapter’s Annual Send-Off Picnic for new IU students living in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas.
In addition, IUAA honored the Chapter with another award for our many community service achievements, which consist of the following activities:
- Participated in the “Hands on D.C.,” an annual event that places hundreds of volunteers into the D.C. public schools to help revitalize them. Our volunteers helped with painting, building, landscaping, and many other hands-on projects. Once again, the Washington, D.C. Chapter sponsored a local D.C. high school by donating $500 and had 20 volunteers to assist with the hands-on work in the school.
- Sponsored the “First Annual Charity Golf Scramble of the D.C. Chapter of IUAA,” which benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area. At IU Day, the Chapter presented Big Brothers Big Sisters with $850.00 towards its efforts for our community’s children.
- Laid wreaths on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery as part of the “Wreaths Across America” program.
- IU vs. Purdue football game watch party raised $100 for New Orleans Habitat for Humanity.
The IUAA has again acknowledged the important role that the Washington, D.C. Chapter plays in carrying on the spirit of IU in our community and in providing opportunities for alumni to stay connected to their alma mater.
Congratulations to our board members, volunteers, members, and participants who helped the chapter with its programs and events during the past year. We could not succeed without everyone’s planning, participation, and enthusiasm. Thank you!
