General Information

The Washington, D.C. Chapter of the IUAA participates in the Capital Area Network’s co-ed recreational sport leagues (CAN): fall flag football (since 2002), summer softball (since 2003), winter basketball (since 2005), and spring soccer (since 2006). CAN's sports leagues pit local alumni chapters against each other on the playing field. For more information on CAN sports and other activities, visit www.dcalum.org.

Softball

The co-ed softball season runs mid-April through mid-August and includes 14 regular-season weeknight games (plus scrimmages) and concludes with the always exciting postseason tournament. There are approximately 70 teams in the CAN league. Games are played on the Ellipse and Mall areas. The IU team always welcomes new players. The all-call to play will be posted on the chapter’s e-newsletter around March of each year for the following April-August season.

2007 Season

Congratulations goes out to our softball team for its runner-up finish at the end-of-season tourney! The team finished its regular season play with an 8-6 record before finishing second to Maryland in the tournament. Next year, the Terps and the rest of the league better watch out for our HOOSIERS!

Flag Football

The flag football season runs from October through December with an end-of-season tournament in January. Fifty teams play 10 weekend games on the Ellipse or Mall during regular season competition. We welcome all new players! In August or September, the chapter all-calls are posted in our e-newsletter.

Basketball

Congratulations go out to our undefeated CAN basketball team!

The team defeated the University of Virginia at the championship game. The game was played at the Verizon Center following a Washington Wizards game on April 9, 2008. Way to go, Hoosiers!

The chapter’s co-ed recreational basketball team is run through the Capital Alumni Network league. The season runs January through March, and approximately eight games, plus a tournament, are played. All new players are welcome. All-calls are posted in the chapter’s e-newsletter around October.

Volleyball

2007 Season

In its inaugural season, IU finished 6-2 and was the runner-up in the post-season tournament! The Hoosiers defeated Ohio State, Carnegie Mellon, and NC State in the initial rounds of the post- season tourney, but were beaten by Maryland in the finals of the CAN Recreational Volleyball Tournament, 2-0. This was a spectacular first season for IU, and we look forward to having many more fun and competitive seasons under our belt!
