Mission
IU Alumni Association Mission Statement
The Indiana University Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends.
The Alumni Association is a membership organization that connects alumni, students, and friends through, communications, activities, programs, and services. The association develops and supports volunteer leadership, serves as a voice for alumni as the university evolves, and provides life-long learning opportunities.
The Alumni Association serves Indiana University by supporting its mission, traditions, and goals and is the keeper of the official alumni records. The association assists in the recruitment of students, supports the development of resources to advance the university, and engages in activities to enhance the University's reputation locally and around the world.
D.C. Chapter of the IU Alumni Association Goals
- Provide fellowship and social opportunities for alumni living in the Washington, D.C. metro area
- Offer programs that educate and inform alumni
- Promote Indiana University in the communities
- Sponsor community service projects
- Contribute to the quality and progress of Indiana University and the IUAA
- Recruit top students to attend Indiana University
- Provide scholarships for students
- Build a base of volunteers to assist Indiana University
Director Roles and Responsibilities
President
- Represent the Chapter at all major events
- Plan and run meetings in an efficient and organized fashion
- Define the chapter's purpose and set attainable goals: celebrate (with directors and volunteers) as we accomplish each goal
- Work closely with IU Alumni Association and our Communications Director to ensure events are planned and promoted effectively
- Host annual strategy board meeting to cover previous year's achievements and upcoming year's goals
- Coordinate with other IU-related Clubs to leverage resources
- Serve as liaison between D.C. Board event directors and the IU Alumni Association
- Prepare announcements to be sent members by email and mail (as needed)
Vice President
- In the absence or disability of the President or at the President’s request, the Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President.
- Work closely with President to ensure the board meets deadlines
- Prepare bi-annual newsletter
- Ensure IU events are advertised locally (when possible)
Treasurer
- Adhere to bi-annual reporting requirements to IU Alumni Association
- Provide timely reimbursement
- Keep records of cash balance, keep us fiscally on track, and keep documentation in order
- Communicate to President when overruns are a concern
Secretary
- Attend all board meetings and keep minutes (assign replacement if cannot attend)
- Help facilitate the meeting and keep it focused
- Send out minutes to board members within a week of meeting
- Sends out notices to the board as needed
Communications/Webmaster
- Keep outline of upcoming & annual events to keep the board on task in terms of timely communications
- Keep website updated with all club events (President's message, calendar, bios, etc.)
- Update the look of the website as needed
- Keep links active and interesting for area alumni
IU Athletics Director
- Coordinate activities related to IU Sports (TV Game Watches, Tailgates, Bus Trips, IU Athletics speakers, etc.)
- Attempt to coordinate an activity for at least one Football/Basketball event per year (e.g., Big Ten tournaments in D.C., Coach event, soccer game, etc. – not including game watching events)
- Get to know and work with Varsity Club liaison (Jim Harris)
Pro Athletics Director
- Coordinate activities related to D.C.-area professional sports (Tailgates, IU Pro basketball player meetings, Nationals baseball games, etc.)
- Attempt to coordinate at least one, professional athletic event per year
- Get to know, and work with D.C.-area professional sports group departments
Community Service Director
- Plan 4-5 Service Events annually (Hands on D.C., Costal Cleanup, etc.)
- Report results and synopsis of event to President
- Take and submit photos of the event
- Attempt to have 1 new event each year
Student Recruiting Director
- Get to know and work with IU Bloomington-Area Admissions Director (Sarah Thompson)
- Attend college fairs and promote IU Alumni involvement
- Help with IU Previews
- Help to organize Student Send-off
- Work closely with CAN/Social Director
CAN & Social Director
- Organize events geared for social interaction (CAN Sport & Social team(s), Hoosier Happy Hours, Big Ten Happy Hours, etc.)
- Attend CAN Representative meetings and be IU's liaison for CAN events
- Work closely with IU CAN softball, football, and other sport coaches and report schedules and game results to the Board
- Coordinate closely with Membership Director
Cultural Director
- Coordinate 3-4 Cultural Events Annually (Museums, Singing Hoosiers, gallery tours, wine tastings, etc.)
- Plan events that target new members/those who do not regularly attend events
- Try to have at least 1 event come from an IU Campus each year or is an IU alumnus in D.C. (Singing Hoosiers, Music School, professor, etc.)
Membership Director
- Work with IU Alumni Association to identify graduates who will be moving to D.C. (especially former student leaders that can be tapped for further involvement)
- Attend as many events as possible and help to promote membership opportunities and benefits
- Work with IU Foundation & other IU-related clubs and organizations to make sure our membership lists are complete and find additional resources for reaching and recruiting members
Scholarship Director
- Focus on raising funds for scholarships (work cooperatively with Corporate Sponsorship Director)
- Promote our D.C. Chapter Scholarship to Students
- Coordinate scholarship application review and selection effort
Corporate Sponsorship Director
- Coordinate with Scholarship Director
- Contact Corporations led by IU Alumni
- Maintain advertisement on our Chapter website
- Work on creating a banner to display at all Chapter events to display corporate sponsors
