About Rod
Rod Fasone accomplished much during his short life. He grew up with a close group of friends who loved life and ran together all the way through college. Nothing could separate them; they were committed friends. But in his junior year of college, after Rod was diagnosed with a rare and virulent form of colon cancer, they realized a new level of love and friendship.
Rod was constantly involved in philanthropic activities in both high school and college. Rod lettered and was senior captain of his high school swim team. At Indiana University he twice rode in the "Little 500" charity bike race, featured in the movie "Breaking Away". And when he couldn't ride during his junior year, after his first extensive cancer surgery, he coached the team.
Rod went on to graduate from IU with degrees in criminal justice and Spanish, entered graduate school, and joined the staff of Indiana U.S. Senators, Richard Lugar and Dan Coats. After his death his mother found this quote from bicyclist Dave Blaze on a clipping in his wallet.
"...the real competition in life is not against others but against yourself…to be able to reach down into myself and find that 'little extra something' that I didn't know I had."
