Community Service
Giving Back
The Monroe County Chapter of the IU Alumni Association is committed to giving back to this wonderful community where we live and work. Several times a year, our chapter works with local agencies/organizations to offer assistance through fundraising, food drives, collections, etc. Some examples of organizations that we have partnered with in the past include:
- Hoosier Hills Food Bank (annual tailgate/food drive)
- Teachers Warehouse (annual game-watching party/school supply drive)
- Backstreet Missions (toy drive)
- Public Television (WTIU)
- IU Circle of Life Mini Marathon (benefiting the Bill Z. Littlefield Scholarship for Survivors)
- Hoosiers Outrun Cancer (benefiting the Olcott Cancer Center)
- Jill Behrman Run for the Endzone (benefiting Jill's House and the Jill Behrman Emerging Leaders Scholarship Fund)
- Adopt A Road (we clean our "adopted" road four times a year)
- Monroe County YMCA Fall Run (raising scholarships at the YMCA)
- IU vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge
- IU Habitat for Humanity
- Bowl for Kids' Sake (benefiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Central Indiana)
- Psi Iota Xi Arts of the Table (benefiting Jill's House)
- American Cancer Society
If there is an organization or agency that you would like us to get involved with, or if you would like to get more involved with our community service efforts, please contact our Community Service Chair, Andrea Cockerham.
Additionally, there are other opportunities you can help out with on an individual basis. There is so much more to giving back to your university than just giving money. Establishing and maintaining strong relationships in the Bloomington community will enrich both your and the students' lives. The IU Alumni Association and the Monroe County IUAA Chapter are committed to finding fulfilling roles for each member who is generous enough to volunteer. Some examples include:
- IUAlumniCareers.com (be a mentor to fellow alumni)
- Career Development Center (be a mentor to students)
- Student Alumni Dinners (host IU students at your home for a home-cooked meal)
- Bloomington Worldwide Friendship, Inc. (be a "host" family for international students)
- City of Bloomington Volunteer Network
