Sponsor Spotlight: November 2006

Sara Herold, Marketing Director, Monroe County YMCA

How long have you been in business in Bloomington?
The Monroe County YMCA was established 25 years ago; however, the YMCA began at IU serving students as a safe haven away from home. Early fundraisers for scholarship funds included IU Sing and Chimes of Christmas.

Describe your business and the services or products you offer.
The Monroe County YMCA is a family fitness center that promotes optimal health, outstanding values, and a kindred community spirit. The YMCA offers programs for all ages and all levels of abilities. Although a Christian-based organization, it welcomes people of all faiths, races, abilities, and economic statuses.

The YMCA raises thousands of dollars annually to provide financial assistance to those in the community, which is part of the YMCA mission: to not deny access to anyone because of ability to pay.

What do you like most about living and having a business in Bloomington/Monroe County?
I personally love living in Bloomington because of the diversity and richness of culture that IU brings to this small town tucked in beautiful southern Indiana. The YMCA reaps the benefits of an incredible staff and diverse membership dedicated to making a difference in this community.

Are you an IU grad? If so, when did you graduate? Degree?
I am an IU grad. I like to say 1985, but technically 1986 because of a two-credit speech class I took as correspondence when my advisor told me I was short hours to graduate. Apparently I was not in a hurry to finish … I was getting tired! I did finish it, though! I have a BA degree in telecommunications and a minor in business.

Fondest IU memory?
Working in the snack bar at Briscoe for three years with my lovely hair net. My co-worker discovered her Lee Press-on Nail was missing after making the popcorn, and half of it was already served. No one ever turned it in … Good thing we wore hair nets and red checked jackets. Do they still wear those?

Why did you choose to be a Corporate Sponsor of the Monroe County Chapter of the IUAA?
We chose to be a corporate sponsor of the Monroe County Chapter of the IUAA because it is important to support the community as they have supported us over the years. In Bloomington, the YMCA began at IU and still to this day students volunteer their time to make this YMCA the best it can be.
