IU GLBTAA Emergency Scholarship

Each year, many GLBT students lose vital financial support needed for their educations for being open and honest about their sexual orientations. These students find themselves in dire need of funds and support in order to reach their educational goals.

The IU GLBTAA Emergency Scholarship is intended for current IU GLBT students who have lost or are facing the loss of financial support from their parents/family after disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity while attending IU.

AWARD AMOUNT:

The award is a maximum of $1,500 per semester. Student eligibility for this emergency aid will be limited to a maximum distribution of two semesters. Second-semester renewal is contingent upon good academic standing.

ELIGIBILITY:

This scholarship is only open to GLBT students attending the IU Bloomington campus. Due to limited funds, at the current time only undergraduate students are eligible.

This scholarship is intended as a last resort for currently enrolled GLBT full-time/part-time students. Students who have been on hiatus for one semester due to financial hardship may also be considered, but currently enrolled students will receive preference.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Before applying for this scholarship, students should contact the Office of Financial Aid to determine what other financial aid options are available.

After contacting financial aid, students should contact the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Student Support Services (GLBTSSS) Office to discuss their individual situations. The GLBTSSS Office is available to answer questions on how to prepare this application and will act as a liaison with the IU GLBTAA in determining recipients.

Due to the potentially sensitive nature of each student’s situation, scholarship applicants and recipients can choose to remain anonymous.

The IU GLBTAA accepts IU GLBTAA Emergency Scholarship applications on a rolling basis. Applications are currently available and being accepted at this time.
