History of the GLBTAA

by Jeff McKinney

I received a grant in April 1996 from IUSA to work with the GLB office. Doug Bauder and I decided that forming an alumni group would be the best project that I could give effort to over the summer. Doug and I met with John Hobson to begin the process. We sent out e-mails to see what interest we had in the community. By the end of August 1996, we had begun monthly organizational meetings and started to form a governing board.

In December 1996, Doug and myself presented the GLBAA to a committee of the IUAA. This was preliminary to what would be our formal request for recognition in June 1997. We continued to meet monthly, planning and organizing events. On June 13, 1997, Doug Bauder, Cindy Stone, and myself presented the group formally to the programs committee for formal recognition. After the presentation, a voice vote was tallied and we were approved as an affiliate alumni group of the IUAA.

In June, we held our first annual picnic at Bradford Woods, and in October, our first annual homecoming dinner. It has been a busy two years and we continue to plan events and programs for the future.
