Keystones of Excellence
Diversity — Embrace Variety, Strengthen the Alumni Connection
With more than 500,000 IU alumni worldwide, it's impossible to maintain an alumni chapter that caters to everyone's interests. However, each individual chapter should work to create a variety of annual events and activities that match some of the varied interests existing among alumni in a chapter area. They should also be sensitive to considering and including all alumni viewpoints and volunteers. In doing so, you are providing different options for alumni chapter members to get involved and feel connected to the chapter! Programming ideas in this Keystone of Excellence include:
- Actively recruit new volunteers each year to assist the chapter with events and programs. Host an event for potential volunteers or solicit volunteer interest via a special mailing or communication.
- With the assistance of the IUAA, specifically recruit current and former student leaders as potential chapter volunteers.
- When recruiting new volunteers, make a special effort to consider all areas and backgrounds, including work, marital status, military experience, religious beliefs, parental status, education, age, race, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities, and sexual orientation.
- Host a special event or program that specifically caters to alumni in underrepresented groups.
- Conduct a survey of chapter members to better understand interests and needs. Utilize results to develop new activities and programs.
- Conduct strategic planning so that chapter can better identify strengths, challenges, and potential opportunities. This plan will assist the chapter in developing a more comprehensive and varied program of activities.
