2004 Award Presentation

On Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, the I-Men’s Association presented the Z.G. Clevenger Awards at the DeVault Alumni Center in Bloomington. The award is presented annually to living I-Men who, as alumni, have made outstanding contributions to Indiana University through service to its athletic program. The award is given in memory of Zora G. Clevenger, a coach and athletic director at Indiana University who was characterized by his commitment to excellence, high ideals, and principles. He was devoted to his staff and worked untiringly to assist the coaches in developing their programs and establishing high ethical standards. This is the highest award that the I-Men’s Association presents. The recipients for 2004 are pictured below.

G.K. “Jerry” Anderson

Jerry was recruited to play football following an outstanding high school career at Grand Rapids, Minn. He was a member of the 1950, 1951, and 1952 football teams. Following graduation with a degree in business, Jerry entered the construction field specializing in glass and aluminum framing, sub-contracting for commercial buildings. After serving in various management capacities with two firms, Jerry became president and director of Apogee Enterprises in Minneapolis. While Jerry was president of Apogee, it was named one of the 100 best companies to work for in America by Fortune Magazine. Jerry retired from Apogee in 1996, but still serves as a consultant. Jerry has maintained close ties with the university. He is a member of the President’s Circle at the IU Foundation and the Academy of Alumni Fellows of the Kelley School of Business. He is also a lifetime alumni member and Dean’s Associate of the Kelley School of Business, a lifetime member of the I-Men’s Association, and a life member of the IU Alumni Association. He is a Hoosier Hundred donor to the Varsity Club.

James Martin Elliott

Following graduation in 1960 from Owensboro High School in Kentucky, Jim enrolled in Indiana University. While at IU, Jim was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and served as football manager for four years under coach Phil Dickens where he received his “I.” Following graduation in 1964, Jim stayed at IU and received his law degree in 1969. He practiced law for a year in Owensboro, Ky., and then returned to IU as controller/vice president of finance and investments at the IU Foundation. Jim served the Foundation for 21 years. Jim formed Elliott and Associates, Inc., a management investment firm based in Bloomington, where he is still active. He is a member of the IU Alumni Association and the I-Men’s Association and is a Hoosier Hundred donor to the Varsity Club. Jim serves on the Varsity Club National Board of Directors and the IUAA Executive Council.

Wayne Radford

Wayne was recruited to Indiana University by coach Bob Knight following an outstanding high-school career at Arlington High School in Indianapolis in 1974. While a member of the basketball team, Wayne received Academic All-American honors in 1978 and was voted MVP of the 1978 team. The 1976 team of which Wayne was a member had a 32-0 record and won the NCAA National Championship. Wayne is a member of the IU Alumni Association and the I-Men’s Association and currently serves as secretary of the Varsity Club National Board of Directors. Wayne is currently District Manager for Cook Surgical, a division of Cook, Inc.
