IU Cares Month Planning Guide

Develop Your Planning TeamStep 2 of 6

Get the most from your IU Cares Month project by involving as many alumni volunteers as possible.

TIP 1: Think about how your chapter members might really enjoy serving.
Understanding how your chapter members enjoy serving and operating is important:

  • Some chapters might enjoy planning and carrying out direct service projects. Members appreciate direct contact with those being helped.
  • Others may enjoy the camaraderie that emerges when partnering with another community organization on a service project.

TIP 2: Talk it over.
Ensure IU Cares Month is a chapter project by inviting all members and non members in the implementation of all activities. Think about how you might include other Keystones of Excellence in your projects. Why not generate excitement by coming up with a brand-new service project that appeals to many?

TIP 3: Select your project coordinator and develop team leaders.
Select members to lead the service, recruitment/diversity/lifelong learning, and publicity components of your IU Cares Month. If your chapter already has committee chairs in place, they may serve as team leaders. Be sure to share the information contained in this planning kit with each of your leaders and their teams.

TIP 4: Encourage everyone to participate.
Build chapter morale by encouraging every member of the board to participate in this project. Not every event gets all of the alumni board members to participate. We encourage every board to make this project involve the entire board. What better way to bond than to serve alongside one another?

TIP 5: Celebrate your IU Cares Month Success!
Celebrate and thank your members for your IU Cares Month accomplishments. Don’t forget to share your chapter’s IU Cares Month success by completing and submitting the IU Cares Month Success form attached to the end of this planning guide. Again, all chapters will be considered for an award in the area of Community Service at our Chapter Leader’s weekend at IU Bloomington in June.
