Why I chose IU
I stumbled on IU by accident. One day, while heading to French class without having done my homework assignment, I noticed a bulletin announcing that IU was visiting our high school. I persuaded my French teacher to allow me to miss class to see the IU presentation. It was just a plan to get out of the homework assignment, but I found that the IU admissions team was attentive, responsive, and highly informative. That day I moved IU to the top of my list of career-building moves following high school graduation.
Favorite memories of IU
My memories are a utopic, joyous answer to the “I WHY?” The labor law lectures of economics professor Fred Witney are where I secured my first “A” grade. Geography professor Dan Knudsen becoming an informal mentor through the years. Being blessed to run for student-government office (Anker-Moellering-Johnson ticket) and winning a seat as IUSA vice president of administration. Serving the community and finding time to celebrate for “any reason” or “anything” with my Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers and other friends. Having access — and the nerve — to seek advice from two great gentlemen, current Dean of Students Richard McKaig and former Dean of Students Michael Gordon. Singing with Dr. Mumford’s African American Choral Ensemble. Finally, my mother, father, and family attending my graduation from IU in 1988.
Advice to undergraduates
My advice to students is to build your foundation of reliable friends and acquaintances through extracurricular campus activities, from student government to fencing to language clubs. Try not to leave an event without reaching out and connecting with someone. Build a network. Remain connected and interested in other people’s interests or, at least, provide positive support. Work diligently to find the “answer,” whatever it may be, for the particular project or point in time, with others or solo, but in the end have personal ownership for success and shortfalls. Bounce back!
Why the IU Alumni Association is important to me
The IU Alumni Association has allowed me to stay informed about IU and old friends. Jerry Tardy, with his high energy and beaming positive attitude, and his team, including John Hobson, made me feel like a member of the alumni family from day one! Soon after graduation, I became involved with the IUAA through a kind administrator at a College of Arts and Sciences distinguished alumni dinner, and I served two terms on the College of Arts and Sciences alumni board of directors. Remaining engaged with the IUAA is something I desire to do. The IUAA keeps me connected and in tune to the happenings at IU and beyond. I am hooked and attached to this great university.
