Is Chocolate One of the Basic Food Groups?

We as consumers are bombarded with information and advertising about the health benefits of chocolate. Research shows that chocolate does not raise cholesterol, nor does it significantly impact blood-sugar levels. Others studies show a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer for those who eat dark chocolate. Yet chocolate can be a high-fat, high-sugar food. Should chocolate be considered a functional food? Should I make room for it in my diet every day?

About Sara Blackburn
Sara Blackburn is Co-director of the IU Dietetic Internship program. Her area of interest is the effective use of medical nutrition therapy to prevent and support recovery from disease. The Indiana State Dietetic and the American Dietetic Association recognized Dr Blackburn as an Outstanding Dietetic Educator. Dr. Blackburn has received six separate teaching awards and has published referred journals and texts.
Dr. Blackburn's interest in chocolate is a personal one and supported by her colleagues in Nutrition and Dietetics. Important department meetings requiring consensus start with chocolate kisses.

Winter College program in 2007. The series was produced by the IU Alumni Association with special
support from Ken Beckley and the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Winter College
