Bloomington man receives IU Alumni Association's Bill Orwig Medal

June 21, 2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Alumni Association has awarded Joseph P. Smith, of Bloomington, this year's Bill Orwig Medal for his outstanding contribution to IU athletics.

The award is given each year to a person who is not an alumnus or alumna of IU. Smith will receive his award during the IUAA's Cream and Crimson barbecue on June 19 in Bloomington. The barbecue is open to the public.

Smith has been the sports director at WGCL-AM 1370 in Bloomington since 1969. For more than 20 years, he has been a member of the broadcast team that covers IU football and basketball games. Smith was inducted into the Indiana Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2003, and he was named the Indiana sportscaster of the year in 1998.

The award's name honors Bill Orwig, who served as IU athletics director from 1961 to 1975.

The IUAA serves the university and its more than 460,000 living graduates through programs, services and communications. One of the nation's largest alumni organizations, the IUAA strives to keep alumni engaged with their alma mater. For information, visit www.alumni.indiana.edu or call (800) 824-3044.
