IU's living graduates total nearly 490,000

September 25, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University now has nearly 490,000 living graduates worldwide, more than 250,000 of whom live in Indiana.

A total of 489,909 living persons hold Indiana University degrees granted through May 2006. The numbers of living graduates for each of IU’s eight campuses are as follows:

According to the 2005 Council of Alumni Association Executives, IU ranks third among U.S. colleges and universities in the total number of living graduates, and its alumni association is the eighth largest with more than 80,000 members. More than 50 percent of Indiana’s physicians, 64 percent of optometrists, 40 percent of nurses, 35 percent of teachers, 75 percent of lawyers, and 90 percent of dentists are IU graduates. The Indiana University Alumni Association has more than 100 chapters throughout the world and sponsors more than 50 school, campus, and special-interest alumni groups.

“The size of the IU alumni body — the third largest among universities in the United States — indicates the significant, positive impact the university is having on people’s lives,” said Ken Beckley, president and CEO of the IU Alumni Association. “With more than a quarter million of those graduates living in Indiana, IU’s impact upon the state is likewise significant. It is the role of the Alumni Association to inform them and engage them with the university.”

While the IUAA is a dues membership organization, its programs and services benefit all alumni and friends of the university. During the last fiscal year, IU alumni groups awarded scholarships worth more than $290,000 to IU students. In its history, the IUAA has awarded student scholarships totaling more than $3.4 million.

Graduates receiving their first IU degree receive their first year of IUAA membership for free and may sign up for two years of membership for only $20. Membership benefits include a subscription to the award-winning Indiana Alumni Magazine, access to the IU alumni online directory, and membership in one's individual school/campus alumni association and local alumni association chapter. Members also receive access to IUAlumniCareers.com, the IUAA's career services center, where they can search job listings, post résumés, or search for career mentors online. Employers seeking IU graduates can post jobs and IU alumni can register to serve as mentors to their fellow alumni.

The Indiana University Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students, and friends. Its headquarters are at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center in Bloomington, and alumni offices are located on each IU campus. For information, visit www.alumni.indiana.edu or call (800) 824-3044.
