The annual Indiana Blood Donor Challenge, a friendly competition that encourages Indiana residents to donate blood, began in 1997 in the Indianapolis area. Since its inception the blood drive has grown to encompass the entire state. Participants can donate blood in the name of IU at their local blood agency. The Blood Donor Challenge is made possible through the collaboration of the Indiana University Alumni Association, Indiana Blood Center, American Red Cross, Heartland Blood Center, Richmond Community Blood Center, and the South Bend Medical Foundation. Since 1997, more than 32,000 donors have participated in the blood drive.

The real winners of this friendly competition are the thousands of hospital patients throughout Indiana whose lives have been saved.
